Kef KHT1005.2 Speaker system High Gloss Black Video Review / Test

Transcript of Video Review

Hi there, my name is Chris - Sales Manager for Sound and Vision in Bolton.  We are looking at a range of speakers today from somebody called KEF.  The model in question is the KHT1005.2.  Now, KEF as a company have been manufacturing speakers since the early 1960s and have a great pedigree in speaker technology.  They make some of the finest speakers in the world.

The speaker in question today, the KHT1005.2, contains KEF’s smallest drive unit, which is the Uni-Q driver.  If I bring this closer to the camera, what you have got here is basically a single drive unit where the tweeter is mounted independently in the centre.  So, on a lot of speakers the tweeter is normally offset to the main drive unit.  Everything on this speaker comes from one focal point.  So you get tremendous direction, great imaging, but fantastic dispersion of the sound.  So no matter where you are sat in the room, you are benefiting from great sort of stereo separation, and great imaging from the 5.1 system.

In the box you get four of these satellite speakers - two for the front and two for the rear.  They come with a flat base on so you can just shelf-mount them.  You also get in the box the centre speaker, which is basically very similar to the satellite speakers but it is mounted horizontally.  So that is the centre and that is one of the satellites.

With the satellite speakers you also get, if you want to wall-mount them, the wall bracket.  So that is the speaker; as we said, flat base.  That is the speaker then with the wall bracket on.  You can see the difference there - it is completely now oval-shaped.  So the wall bracket forms part, then, of the bottom of the speaker.  And that is the bracket to the rear there; as you can see, it gets it extremely close to the wall.

The speaker itself; the binding posts are attached directly to the speaker.  They just press down and the cable goes inside the terminal.  And they are just marked then with the red and the black indication markers on the rear of the speaker.

The speakers themselves are in a die-cast aluminium chassis.  They can be driven from any amplifier, from 10 to 100 watts.  So they are extremely efficient.  They are 8 Ohm impedance.   The subwoofer itself will go down to as low as 38Hz and up to 150Hz.  So 38Hz down on the subwoofer, to 150Hz.  Then the speakers themselves kick in at 120Hz up to 22kHz.  So when you consider some people who have really perfect hearing can hear up to around sort of the early to mid 20kHz range, they will cover an up to that sort of range for you as well.

What I would say, if you would like more details on this range of speakers, and many more in the KEF range, is please give me a ring - my name is Chris - at Sound and Vision, on 01204 861 861.  Or go through to our website - you are looking at a video clip here on the KEF speakers; there are other video clips on there on other speakers, amplifiers, as well as TVs as well.  So either go through to our website, www.soundandvision.co.uk, call into one of our stores, either in Bolton or in Leeds, where these speakers are on demonstration there so you can have a good listen to them.  Or, as I said, give me a ring - my name is Chris - on 01204 861 861.

Thank you.

KEF are delighted to announce the introduction of their second generation Home Theatre 1000 series.

The KHT1005.2 is a new version of KEF’s compact ‘egg’ home theatre system. The 5.1 system comes complete with the now iconic ‘egg’ satellite loudspeakers, a centre channel and the new Kube-1 subwoofer. The satellites and centre
channel have an enhanced sound performance and an improved output but the most significant change comes from the introduction of the compact and lightweight Kube-1 subwoofer.

The KHT1005.2 uses KEF’s smallest Uni-Q® driver (75mm / 3in.). Its metal dome tweeter and neodymium magnets deliver an extended bandwidth normally associated with much larger units. KEF’s Uni-Q technology disperses the
sound across a wider area ensuring the full enjoyment of the soundtrack is experienced by everyone regardless of where they are sat.

In addition to the well known KEF silver finish the KHT1005.2 also comes in high gloss black to better compliment today’s flatscreen TVs.

The sound image is completed by the Kube-1 subwoofer providing a performance that belies its size, with a 150W onboard amplifier driving an 8 inch long-throw bass unit and an 8-inch auxilary bass driver, the output can be adjusted for both frequency and level, for better personalisation.

The 5.1 system includes both desktop and wall brackets mounts for a wider choice of set-up options.
