Transcript of Video Review

Hi there, my name is Chris - Sales Manager for Sound and Vision in Bolton.  We are going to look at today a completely unique product from Philips.  The model number of this product is the 56PFL9954.  It is an LCD TV - but what makes it so unique is its screen format, which is 21:9 ratio.  The standard widescreen TV adopts a ratio of 16:9.  The problem with that is that if you are watching a movie on DVD or Blu-Ray DVD, the picture is not only cropped at the side - so you are not getting the full width of that movie; you are missing detail at the edges - is that you are still getting those black lines top and bottom of the screen - which is one of the main reasons for widescreen TV; when you went from your old square box in the corner of your room to widescreen, is to get rid of those lines.

The problem with that is that if you just go for the standard 16:9 ratio TV and you are watching a movie on that, you will still get those black lines top and bottom of the screen.  But with this new model from Philips - the 56PFL9954 , no more black lines.  You are getting the full height of the movie, without those black lines, and more width - so you are getting more detail as well on really sort of parts of the film that you would actually miss if you didn’t have a 21:9 ratio TV.

This particular model is also Full High Definition - so it will cope with 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolution.  So if you want to connect a Blu-Ray DVD into here to get the best possible picture quality, it will cope with 1080p no problem at all.  If you want to connect Sky HD into it, you have got plenty of HDMI sockets on the back of here, so you can connect Sky HD, your Blu-Ray DVD with no issues.

This particular set has a Contrast ratio of eighty thousand to one.  Now, the Contrast ratio is a very important factor to look for in any TV because it judges how good that black level is onscreen.  And if you are getting a good depth of black, you are getting a really good natural colour palette and good depth of field.

So, on this particular model it is Full High Definition, new format - 21:9 screen ratio; great Contrast ratio on here as well - but it is also 200Hz scanning.  So, when you look at, say, a standard TV which is 50Hz, this TV scans at four times that normal rate.  So if you are looking at really fast movement, i.e. sport, on a 50Hz TV, you can get a slight drag and delay in the image.  On this set, at 200Hz, it is scanning at four times that speed, so there is no delay or drag in that image.

This particular set has also got Wi-Fi built into it.  So you can connect this up to your sort of home PC network and you can have the web direct onto your TV.  There is no need for any external connection - it will do it all via Wi-Fi which is built into the set itself.

You have also got Philips Ambilight facility built into the TV which will actually project the light behind the TV from what is being screened on the TV set itself.  So if you have got blues and reds on the image it will project those lights behind the screen.  That gives you the sense of a bigger screen but is also easier on the eyes to view.

So on this set it is Full HD, eighty thousand to one Contrast, 21:9 ratio - no more black lines; Wi-Fi compatible to your home- based web system.  I can’t think of a TV which is producing this sort of specification - and it is the only TV, completely unique, that gives you that 21:9 aspect.

Now, there are plenty of features on this TV to go through.  What I would say is either give me a ring personally at the shop on 01204 861 861 and ask for Chris - or go to our website, which is www.soundandvision.co.uk - you will get plenty more detail on there.  Or you will find there is a link - just click the link at the side of the screen and you will get onto more detail that way as well.

Thank you.
